Sometimes a simple Google.com search will tell you everything you need to know prior to giving a monetary donation.

Check with the Better Business Bureau and Ripoffreport.com for complaints against the rescue.

Make sure you are helping the horses, NOT the Horse Trader. Research, research, research!
